Era of Bank Robbery Long Gone in Lagos, IGP Egbetokun Declares

At the Lagos State Security Trust Fund's 18th Annual Town Hall Meeting on Security, the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, announced that the era of bank robberies in Lagos State is effectively over.

Speaking to an audience that included key stakeholders in security and governance, Egbetokun highlighted the remarkable decline in bank robbery incidents since 2007.

"There was a time when armed robbery and bank robbery were rampant in Lagos," Egbetokun stated. "However, I can recall that since 2007 till date, only one bank robbery succeeded in Lagos, and that was as far back as 2014. So, the days of armed robbery, bank robbery are gone."

The IGP attributed this success to the robust support from the Lagos State government, which has been instrumental in equipping the police force with necessary resources.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, present at the event, reinforced this commitment by donating over 250 brand-new patrol vehicles, along with hardware, communications gadgets, and protective gear to bolster security operations across the state.

Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized the role of technology in enhancing security measures, revealing plans to deploy drone technology for monitoring waterways and densely populated areas. "Lagos is now properly mapped, and drone technology will be deployed at appropriate levels to ensure effective area monitoring, crowd management, and traffic assessment," he said.

Egbetokun also noted the challenges posed by internal migration, as thousands of people move into Lagos daily, impacting the state's security dynamics.

This influx necessitates continuous adaptation and strengthening of security strategies by the police.

The meeting shows the collaborative efforts between the state government and law enforcement agencies in maintaining Lagos as a secure economic hub.

The strategic deployment of resources and technology marks a proactive approach to sustaining peace and safety in the region.
