EPL: We’re Less Dependent on Cole Palmer This Season – Chelsea Coach, Maresca

Chelsea's head coach Enzo Maresca has emphasized a strategic shift in the team's dynamics, highlighting a reduced reliance on their star player, Cole Palmer in the current Premier League season.

This change comes after a period where Palmer was often seen as the linchpin of Chelsea's attacking prowess. Maresca's comments reflect a broader tactical evolution within the club, aiming to distribute responsibilities more evenly across the squad.

Cole Palmer, who joined Chelsea from Manchester City on transfer deadline day in September 2023, has been a standout performer since his arrival. His technical skills and ability to play both as an attacking midfielder and a winger have made him a crucial asset for the team.

Last season, Palmer's contributions were pivotal, with him being involved in over 30 goal involvements, making him one of the most influential young players in the league. His performances earned him accolades, including the PFA Young Player of the Year award in August 2024.

Despite his individual brilliance, Maresca has been keen to ensure that Chelsea does not become overly dependent on Palmer. "If you remember in my first press conference I said that we cannot rely on Cole for every game because it is not correct," Maresca stated.

He further elaborated on the importance of creating a balanced team where multiple players can step up and make huge contributions. This season, other players like Christopher Nkunku and Nicolas Jackson have also emerged as key figures, with Nkunku scoring ten goals and Jackson netting eight.

Maresca's approach is not just about reducing the pressure on Palmer but also about fostering a more cohesive and versatile team. "He has to enjoy football. But if we prepare the season thinking Cole is the only solution then we are wrong. We work every day to allow Cole to be in situations where he can be the best and be good," Maresca explained.

The shift in strategy has also been reflected in Chelsea's overall performance this season. The team has become the Premier League's most prolific outfit, shedding the 'Cole Palmer FC' tag that had previously been associated with them. In a recent match against Southampton, Chelsea secured a commanding 5-1 victory, bringing their goalscoring tally to 31 in just 14 Premier League games.

Palmer himself has expressed his aspirations beyond club success, eyeing prestigious individual honors such as the Ballon d'Or. Despite finishing 25th in the latest rankings, he remains determined to push further and achieve greater heights in his career. "Ballon d'Or, that's what everyone wants to win," Palmer mentioned on the Men In Blazers podcast, highlighting his ambition and drive.
