President Bola Tinubu has on Monday issued a directive for the immediate release of all minors detained in connection with the #EndBadGovernance protests that took place in August.
This announcement was made by Mohammed Idris, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, during an emergency briefing at the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja. The President's order emphasized the release of these minors without prejudice to any ongoing legal processes.
The directive came amidst public outcry over the trial of at least 76 individuals, including 30 children aged between 14 and 17, who faced charges such as treason, destruction of property, public disturbance, and mutiny.
In response, President Tinubu also instructed the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction to ensure the welfare of the released minors and facilitate their reunion with their families across Nigeria.
Furthermore, an administrative committee led by the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs is to be established to investigate the circumstances surrounding the arrests, detention, treatment, and eventual release of these minors.
The President also mandated an investigation into the conduct of law enforcement agents involved in the arrests, with disciplinary actions to follow if any infractions are discovered.
