A State High Court in Edo State has ordered the reinstatement of 18 suspended local council chairmen.
The court's decision, delivered by Justice Efe Ikponmwonba on Friday, December 20, restrains the Edo State Government and Governor from enforcing the suspension resolution passed by the Edo State House of Assembly.
The suspensions were initially enacted following allegations of misconduct and insubordination against the local council chairmen.
These allegations were brought forward in a petition by Governor Monday Okpebholo, who accused the council leaders of failing to submit their local government areas' financial statements.
Justice Ikponmwonba's ruling emphasized maintaining the status quo as of December 12, pending the outcome of a motion on notice filed on that date. "The defendants are hereby restrained from acting on the resolution of the Edo State House of Assembly suspending the claimants," stated Justice Ikponmwonba during the court proceedings.
