Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has initiated a comprehensive probe into the administration of his predecessor, Godwin Obaseki.
This development was announced as part of Governor Okpebholo's commitment to ensuring probity in governance.
The governor has established a 14-member State Assets Verification Committee, which will be chaired by Dr. Ernest Afolabi Umakhihe.
The committee is set to be inaugurated on November 26, 2024, at Government House in Benin City. According to Fred Itua, the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, the committee's mandate is to "drive accountability and transparency in governance," addressing gaps in the asset and liability records left by the previous administration.
Governor Okpebholo, who took office on November 12, has made it clear that accountability is a central theme of his leadership. He has pledged to investigate several issues from the past, including the exclusion of 14 lawmakers from the State House of Assembly in 2019 and civil service recruitments conducted under Obaseki from May to November 2024.
The committee includes notable figures from Edo State, such as Kassim Afegbua, Patrick Ikhariale, and Taiwo Akerele, among others.
