Nollywood actress Mercy Johnson Okojie has recently faced massive backlash for her involvement in the political campaign of Senator Monday Okpebholo, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for the upcoming Edo State gubernatorial election scheduled for September 21, 2024.
Johnson, who is married to Prince Odianose Okojie, a politician in Edo State, was seen actively campaigning at a rally in Ward 6, Irruekpen, Esan West LGA.
In a viral video from the event, Mercy Johnson urged women to encourage their husbands and children to vote for Okpebholo. This move has sparked outrage among netizens, who have criticized her for supporting a candidate amidst the country's ongoing hardships.
One user commented, "If you all like follow Mercy Johnson campaign oo. You all should know that she has cashed out. She only working for the money. Don’t be foolish to follow her. If Nigeria spoil e no affect her oo." Another user harshly remarked, "E no go better for this ashawo. God punish you there."
The criticism comes at a time when Senator Okpebholo is embroiled in controversy over alleged age falsification. According to SaharaReporters, discrepancies were found in the birth dates provided in his nomination forms submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The Chief Magistrate Court of Federal Capital Territory in Wuse Magisterial District has summoned Okpebholo to appear on September 20, 2024, just a day before the election, to answer charges of forgery and perjury.
Despite these controversies, former APC Chairman and current Senator representing Edo North, Adams Oshiomhole, has been a vocal supporter of Okpebholo. However, his involvement has also been contentious, with some questioning whether Oshiomhole or Okpebholo is the actual candidate. Oshiomhole's past actions, including his public mockery of Governor Obaseki's wife, Betsy, have further fueled the debate.
