Edo Governor to Swear In 3 Judges

Governor Monday Okpebholo is set to swear in three High Court judges on Monday, December

This event will take place at 1:00 p.m. in the State Executive Council Chambers, Government House, Benin City. The judges Ojo Maureen Osa, Godwin Jeff Okundamiya, and Edoghogho Eboigbe were among eight recommended by the National Judicial Council in June 2023.

Governor Okpebholo's decision comes after his predecessor, Godwin Obaseki, swore in only five of the eight judges earlier this year, leaving these three appointments pending. In his inaugural speech on November 12, Governor Okpebholo emphasized his commitment to the rule of law and the separation of powers, stating, "This administration is dedicated to upholding the principles enshrined in our Constitution and ensuring justice and fairness for all."

The Secretary to the State Government, Musa Umar Ikhilor, highlighted that the governor's actions are intended to "strengthen the judiciary to deliver on its mandate of justice and fairness to the general public."

Furthermore, Governor Okpebholo has directed Chief Judge Daniel Okungbowa to investigate the reasons behind the delay in the judges' swearing-in, showing the importance of accountability and transparency in governance transitions.
