The Labour Party (LP) candidate, Olumide Akpata has emphasized that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has no excuse to fail in conducting a transparent and fair election in the ongoing Edo State governorship election.
Speaking on Saturday, September 21, after casting his vote at polling unit 11 in Oredo Local Government Area, Akpata expressed satisfaction with the voting process at his location.
"I was given my ballot paper. I thumb printed where you would imagine I would thumb print. Everything went well," Akpata stated, adding, "I want to hope that this is the experience of every Edo voter. I’m going to wait for feedback around the State; it’s 192 wards. We are hopeful that this will be the experience of every Edo voter."
Despite his positive personal experience, Akpata called on INEC to ensure a level playing field for all candidates. "And I am calling on INEC that the playing field should remain neutral. Nobody should be given undue advantage. This is an off-cycle election. INEC has no excuse," he asserted.
Akpata's comments come amid reports of faulty Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVA) machines and delays caused by late-arriving INEC officials at some polling stations.
