Edo 2024: IGP Orders Arrest of Police Spy Over Political Comments in Viral Video

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered the arrest of a police spy over a viral video calling on Edo voters to vote against the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP candidate, Asuye Ighodaro, in the upcoming governorship election.

In a viral video sighted by ICMNEWS, a man in a spy police uniform can be heard saying that the incumbent governor, Godwin Obaseki, and the PDP candidate have committed crimes against the people of the state. He urged voters to seize the election as an opportunity to fight back, stressing that the governor and his nominated candidate have betrayed democracy in the state. He said: “The election is not about the APC, PDP or the Labour Party, but about the actions of Governor Obaseki against the good people of Edo State.

“They have fought and betrayed democracy, abandoned the rule of law and stolen our resources. It's time to judge them.

However, the Nigerian police sent a comment on Wednesday. Police spokesperson Olumuyiwa Afejobi in a statement clarified that the individuals are not regular members of the NPF but independent police officers (spies) trained by the Nigerian Police to carry out certain security activities mainly at their workplaces.

"They do not receive salary from the NPF, nor have they taken an oath of allegiance like normal sworn police officers. Therefore, they have the right to belong to any political party of their choice and freedom of expression," he said. In this surviving case, police did not allow him to wear an official spy uniform and engage in political activities.

The statement also said the person involved had been arrested for further investigation.
