The Ebonyi State government has initiated a major program aimed at addressing the issue of child labor and street begging within the Abakaliki metropolis.
This initiative, led by Felicia Nwankpuma, the Commissioner of Women Affairs and Social Development, focuses on capturing data on underage beggars and hawkers. The primary goal is to reduce instances of child labor, particularly during school hours, and facilitate the reintegration of these children into educational institutions.
The emphasis on child labor as a critical issue is reiterated by Ms. Nwankpuma, who described "child hawking and begging, especially during school hours, as child labour."
Key elements of the initiative include not only the data capturing of underage individuals but also the empowerment of adult beggars through skills training.
The program plans to collaborate with health institutions like the Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital to provide treatment for mentally-ill individuals found on the streets. This comprehensive approach involves working closely with royal fathers, community leaders, and other stakeholders to ensure accurate identification and support for those in need.
