Operatives of Nigeria's Department of State Services (DSS) in the early hours of Monday, August 5th, 2024 arrested Michael Lenin, a prominent leader of the ongoing #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protests.
Lenin, who serves as the National Coordinator of the Youth Rights Campaign, was detained at his residence in the Apo-Dutse area of Abuja around 2 am.
The arrest was confirmed by Damilare Adenola, the Director of Mobilisation for the Take It Back Movement, who reported that Lenin was assaulted during the raid.
The protests, which began on August 1st, have seen widespread participation across Nigeria, with citizens demanding an end to bad governance and economic hardship.
Despite the government's attempts to quell the demonstrations, including the use of teargas and live bullets against unarmed protesters and journalists, the movement has continued to gain momentum.
Lenin had recently criticized President Bola Tinubu's address to the nation, describing it as "out of touch with reality" and dismissive of the protesters' demands.
He urged Nigerians to continue the protests until their demands are met, emphasizing that the government's tactics of violence and propaganda would not succeed in silencing the movement.
The arrest of Lenin has sparked further outrage among protesters, who view it as an attempt to intimidate and suppress their efforts. As the protests enter their fifth day, the call for justice and accountability remains strong, with organizers planning to continue their demonstrations until August 10th.
