Drug Abuse Fuels High Rate of Criminality in Nigeria - NDLEA Warns

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) of Nigeria has highlighted the critical role that drug misuse plays in escalating crime and illegal activities across the nation.

Commander Olusegun Adeyeye of the NDLEA Idiroko Special Command emphasized this point during a significant event where Cannabis Sativa and Tramadol, valued at 117 million Naira, were handed over by the Ogun 1 Area command of the Nigeria Customs Service.

Adeyeye explained, "The rate of criminality and illegality that we are witnessing today emanates from the use of drugs; it is an influencer and enabler."

He further elaborated on the profound impact of narcotics, stating that they embolden individuals to commit acts they would not ordinarily consider, thereby posing severe threats to Nigeria's social, economic, and security systems.

The NDLEA commander urged collective action against drug abuse, calling on religious and community leaders to participate actively in awareness campaigns. "Everybody is involved.

Drugs are in everybody’s home," he noted, highlighting the pervasive nature of the issue and the vulnerability of families.

To support those affected by addiction, Adeyeye mentioned the availability of rehabilitation centers and a toll line for assistance, encouraging people to seek help without fear of stigma.

He also praised the collaborative efforts between the NDLEA and the Nigeria Customs Service, describing them as "twin brothers" in the fight against illicit drugs.
