A South African group known as Progressive Forces has initiated a petition to prevent Chidimma Adetshina, the newly crowned Miss Universe Nigeria, from participating in the upcoming Miss Universe 2024 pageant.
This move comes amid allegations of identity fraud involving Adetshina's mother, which have led to significant controversy.
Chidimma Adetshina, who recently arrived in Mexico to represent Nigeria at the global competition scheduled for November, has faced criticism stemming from her previous participation in the Miss South Africa contest.
During this time, the South Africa Department of Home Affairs (DHA) uncovered preliminary evidence suggesting that Adetshina’s mother was involved in fraud and identity theft.
As a result, both Chidimma and her mother's identities were canceled by court order on October 29th.
Following these allegations, Adetshina withdrew from the Miss South Africa pageant and accepted an invitation to join the Miss Universe Nigeria competition, where she emerged victorious.
However, the controversy did not end there. The Progressive Forces group argues that allowing Adetshina to compete in Miss Universe could "jeopardize the integrity of the Miss Universe brand."
Their petition, which has garnered over 1,000 signatures within 24 hours, reflects widespread public concern.
"We are greatly concerned about Chidimma Adetshina, Miss Universe Nigeria, whose mother has been found guilty of committing identity fraud," the group stated in their petition.
