Human rights activist and former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has publicly condemned Labour Party's presidential candidate, Peter Obi, for his visit to renowned legal luminary, Aare Afe Babalola SAN.
The visit was reportedly aimed at resolving the ongoing legal issues involving detained activist Dele Farotimi.
Peter Obi's visit to Ekiti State included a closed-door meeting with Afe Babalola and sessions with Dele Farotimi, who is currently facing defamation charges filed by Babalola.
This move has been met with criticism from Sowore, who took to his social media platform to express his disapproval. "I condemn those who went to ‘beg’ Chief Afe Babalola today over unjust detention and persecution of Dele Farotimi," Sowore stated.
He further likened Obi's actions to "forcing Rosa Parks to return to the back of the bus of racial injustice during the civil rights era in the United States," emphasizing what he perceives as a betrayal of justice principles.
The legal battle between Farotimi and Babalola has been contentious, with Farotimi recently granted a N50 million bail by the Federal High Court. His legal team is still working on fulfilling the bail conditions.
Meanwhile, Farotimi has filed a preliminary objection to strike out the defamation suit, arguing that the charges are legally unfounded and that the magistrate court lacks jurisdiction.
Obi's visit, reportedly arranged by a prominent Yoruba leader, was intended to find an amicable resolution to the dispute.
