A Nigerian singer Speed Darlington, whose real name is Darlington Okoye, has found himself embroiled in a legal battle that has captured public attention.
The controversy began with his arrest in October following a petition by fellow artist Burna Boy. Initially granted administrative bail, Darlington was re-arrested upon returning to Nigeria for a performance, accused of jumping bail. This situation has raised significant concerns about the conduct of the Nigeria Police Force and the broader implications for individual rights within the country.
Darlington's initial arrest in October was linked to a petition filed by Burna Boy. After being detained for five days, he was granted administrative bail.
His lawyer, Stan Alieke, explained that Darlington had a medical emergency requiring him to travel abroad, which delayed his return to report back as required by the bail conditions.
Upon his return to Nigeria for a performance in Owerri, Imo State, Darlington was re-arrested. The police alleged that he had jumped bail, a claim contested by his legal team.
Alieke emphasized that Darlington had no intention of evading justice, stating, "If he wanted to run, he wouldn’t have come back."
Deji Adeyanju has been vocal in criticizing the police's actions, describing them as a violation of Darlington's rights. He highlighted the misuse of security agencies to intimidate individuals, noting, "Apparently some powerful forces are intimidating him, with the view of violating his rights."
In response, Adeyanju has initiated fundamental rights proceedings at the Federal High Court to secure Darlington's release.
