A terrorist attack on December 16, resulted in the deaths of nine individuals across two villages in central Mali.
The assault, which took place in Segue and Sonfounou villages, claimed seven lives in Segue and two in Sonfounou, according to reports from local authorities.
The diocese of the Mopti region, through its secretary and priest Daniel Camille Togo, confirmed the attack, stating, "The assault has not only taken lives but also caused significant property damage."
Among the victims was a relative of a cleric, highlighting the personal toll of the violence.
A civil society group, the Patriotic Movement for the Unity and Safeguarding of the Bankass Cercle, expressed their shock and dismay at the attack.
They reported that critical infrastructure, including a clinic, village pharmacy, and an ambulance, were set ablaze. Additionally, the mayor's private car was destroyed, and multiple motorbikes were stolen.
Mali has been grappling with a complex crisis since 2012, marked by political instability, security threats from extremist groups linked to Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State, and a separatist insurgency in the northern desert regions.
