Cryptocurrency entrepreneur Justin Sun has consumed a banana artwork he had purchased for an astounding $6.2 million.
The artwork, titled "Comedian," was created by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan and consists of a simple banana duct-taped to a wall. This conceptual piece gained massive attention when it debuted at Art Basel Miami Beach in 2019.
The purchase took place at a Sotheby's auction in New York, where Sun, the founder of TRON cryptocurrency, placed the winning bid. Despite knowing that the banana was not meant to be eaten, Sun decided to consume it during a press conference held at The Peninsula Hong Kong, one of the city's most luxurious hotels located in the bustling shopping district of Tsim Sha Tsui.
Before eating the banana, Sun praised Cattelan's work, drawing parallels between conceptual art and cryptocurrency, describing the banana as "iconic." He further expressed his admiration by stating, "It's much better than other bananas. It's really quite good."
In a gesture of gratitude towards the vendor who originally sold the banana to Cattelan for just 35 cents, Sun announced plans to purchase 100,000 more bananas from the vendor, Shah Alam, based in New York's Upper East Side. These bananas will be distributed free worldwide, with individuals able to claim one by showing a valid ID, while supplies last.
