Convicted Bank Robber Granted 'Compassionate Release' After 26 Years in Jail is Sent Back to Prison for Same Crime

Markham David Bond, a 61-year-old convicted bank robber, has been sent back to prison after being found guilty of committing the same crime for which he was previously incarcerated.

Bond, who was released early from federal prison in 2022 on "compassionate release" grounds, was convicted by a federal jury in Los Angeles last Thursday.

Bond's criminal history dates back to the mid-1990s when he was sentenced to 46 years and 10 months in prison for bank robbery and firearms offenses. However, after serving 26 years, he was granted early release due to "extraordinary and compelling reasons," as outlined by the United States Sentencing Commission.

Despite this second chance, Bond returned to his life of crime. On August 18, 2023, he brazenly robbed a Brinks courier at gunpoint in a Chase bank parking lot near Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).

The robbery netted him approximately $145,000 in cash. The Brinks employee, fearing for his life, complied with Bond's demands, dropping a duffle bag filled with money.

Following his arrest on November 22, 2023, law enforcement officials discovered a wealth of evidence linking Bond to the crime. A search of his residence and the getaway car used in the heist revealed cash hidden inside a mini-refrigerator, a .40-caliber pistol with ammunition, and the shirt he wore during the robbery. An empty Brinks bag was also found in the vehicle. U.S.

Attorney Martin Estrada expressed disappointment over Bond's actions, stating, "After being given a second chance in life, this defendant sadly chose a path of violent crime." He emphasized the commitment of federal and local law enforcement to protect the community by holding violent offenders accountable.

Bond's sentencing hearing is scheduled for July 11, 2025, where he faces a statutory maximum sentence of life in federal prison.
