The Coalition of Southern Groups (CSG) has urged President Bola Tinubu to declare a state of emergency on all federal roads in Nigeria's southern regions.
This appeal was made during the coalition's inaugural media briefing held in Abuja, where they highlighted the dire condition of these roads, which severely hampers travel across the South-South, South-East, and South-West areas.
Prof. Vitalis Orikeze Ajumbe, the chairman of the coalition and a former Commissioner in Imo State, emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, "The sordid state of the roads is yearning for attention and long overdue for total repairs and overhaul."
He pointed out that the southern region, which produces vital resources like oil—referred to as "liquid gold"—is crucial for Nigeria's economic well-being, yet its infrastructure has been neglected for decades.
The CSG proposed a law requiring public officials to use these deteriorating roads for local trips, aiming to highlight the need for immediate improvements.
They also called for enhancing the capacities of Federal Controllers of Works in each state to ensure effective supervision and maintenance of road infrastructure.
