Chinese President Xi Jinping Declines Trump's Inauguration Invitation

Chinese President Xi Jinping has reportedly declined an invitation from U.S. President-elect Donald Trump attended his inauguration ceremony scheduled for January 20, 2025.

This decision comes amidst ongoing tensions and competitive dynamics between the two global superpowers.

According to sources familiar with the situation, President Xi's decision not to attend the inauguration is seen as a strategic move by Beijing, reflecting the complexities of U.S.-China relations.

The Chinese leader's absence marks a continuation of a longstanding tradition, as no Chinese head of state has ever attended an American presidential inauguration.

The invitation, extended shortly after Trump's election victory, was part of an effort by the incoming administration to foster dialogue with both allies and adversaries.

However, experts suggest that the gesture may have been perceived as too risky by Beijing, given the current geopolitical climate. "Can you imagine Xi Jinping sitting outdoors in Washington, D.C., in January at the feet of the podium, surrounded by hawkish members of Congress?" remarked Danny Russel, former assistant secretary of state for East Asian and Pacific affairs.

Despite the snub, China's ambassador to the U.S. and his spouse are expected to represent Beijing at the event, adhering to standard diplomatic protocol.

Additional Chinese officials may also join the delegation, ensuring that China maintains a presence at the ceremony.

The decision not to attend is further complicated by President-elect Trump's previous statements regarding imposing tariffs as high as 60% on Chinese goods and limiting Chinese ownership of U.S. land and resources.

Such policies have historically strained relations between the two nations, leading to trade wars and heightened tensions.

Yun Sun, director of the China program at the Stimson Center, emphasized the cautious approach adopted by Beijing. "I don’t think the Chinese will take the risk," she noted, highlighting concerns over potential diplomatic faux pas and the presence of controversial figures on the guest list.
