Chile's President Gabriel Boric revealed that he and his partner, Paula Carrasco, are expecting their first child.
This makes Boric the first president in Chile's history to have a child without being married, a significant milestone in the socially conservative, Catholic-majority nation.
The news was shared in the early hours of Wednesday through a heartfelt Instagram post by the couple.
The post featured an ultrasound image of their baby, accompanied by a message from Boric and Carrasco: “While we are waiting for you… we will do our best to make sure you can live in a fair and happy Chile.”
Gabriel Boric, at 38, is Latin America’s youngest leader. His partner, Paula Carrasco, is a 30-year-old environmental chemist who also plays professional basketball for Chile’s national team.
The couple met during the Pan American Games held in Chile in October 2023 and went public with their relationship in September 2024.
