The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has made an arrest at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, showing the ongoing battle against international drug trafficking.

On Thursday, October 3, Adrienne Munju, a 41-year-old Canadian national, was apprehended for attempting to smuggle a substantial consignment of 'Canadian Loud,' a potent synthetic cannabis strain, into Nigeria. This marked her first visit to the country.

During the inward clearance of passengers on a KLM airline flight from Canada, NDLEA operatives discovered 74 parcels of the illicit substance, weighing a total of 35.20 kilograms, concealed in two of Munju's three bags. The agency's spokesman, Femi Babafemi, confirmed the arrest in a statement released on October 6, 2024.

In her confession, Munju revealed that she had been recruited through an online platform to traffic the drugs for a promised payment of 10,000 Canadian dollars. She stated that the financial incentive was intended to support her ongoing master's degree program in Canada. This case underscores the increasing trend of individuals being drawn into drug trafficking via online channels due to financial pressures.

In a separate operation, NDLEA agents in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, intercepted a massive haul of opioids, including 13,298,000 pills and 338,253 bottles of codeine-based cough syrup. These substances, valued at over ₦9,017,771,000, were found in three containers originating from India. The seizures were part of a joint examination conducted with the Nigerian Customs and other port stakeholders on October 2nd and 3rd, 2024.
