Indian billionaire Ratan Tata, known for his leadership of the Tata Group and associations with iconic brands like Jaguar, Land Rover, and Tetley, has left a significant portion of his £91 million fortune to his German shepherd, Tito.
This decision, revealed in his will following his death at age 86, marks a departure from traditional inheritance practices in India.
Ratan Tata, who never married or had children, chose to prioritize the well-being of his beloved pet over conventional familial inheritance.
His will specifies that Tito is to receive "unlimited care," a gesture reflecting the deep bond and companionship the dog provided him.
As Suhel Seth, a close friend of Tata, noted, "This will is not a statement of wealth but a gesture of gratitude for the joy and care he was given by his pets and two closest aides."
In addition to Tito, Tata's former butler, Konar Subbiah, and cook, Rajan Shaw, have been generously compensated.
They are now responsible for Tito's care and, according to Seth, "They will never have to work again and they will be very well looked after."
