The Nigerian Senate has approved the second reading of a bill aimed at establishing the Federal University of Science and Technology in Korokorosei, Bayelsa State.

The bill, sponsored by Senator Benson Konbowel of the People's Democratic Party (PDP), Bayelsa Central, seeks to enhance educational opportunities in science and technology across the nation.

During the plenary session on Tuesday, Senator Konbowel articulated the vision behind the proposed university, emphasizing its role in providing education not only to the people of Bayelsa but to students from all over Nigeria. "The university will serve as an institution of learning where people from all parts of the country can come and learn," he stated.

The proposed institution is designed to offer both undergraduate and postgraduate programs in various fields, including Marine Engineering, Petroleum, Medical Science, and Information Technology.

Senator Konbowel highlighted that the university would contribute to developing the skilled manpower necessary for Nigeria's economic growth. "Education is a driver of the modern economy," he remarked, underscoring the importance of training young men and women in relevant scientific and technological disciplines.

Senator Seriake Dickson, representing Bayelsa West, also voiced his support for the bill, stressing the need for increased investment in the nation's education sector. He urged fellow lawmakers to back the establishment of the university, citing the critical need for additional educational infrastructure in Bayelsa State.

The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, referred the bill to the Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFund for further legislative review, with a report expected in four weeks.
