Renowned comedian and filmmaker Bright Okpocha, popularly known as Basketmouth, has voiced his disappointment with the Nigerian film industry.
He criticized his colleagues for failing to adequately showcase the rich and diverse culture of Nigeria in their cinematic productions.
Basketmouth, who hails from Abia State but was born in Lagos, expressed his concerns about the current state of cultural representation in Nigerian movies. "Most of the epic movies released recently do not promote the country's culture," he lamented.
He emphasized that filmmakers are missing valuable opportunities to highlight Nigeria's cultural heritage positively.
The comedian's critique comes at a time when there is a growing call for the preservation and promotion of national values through various media.
Nigerian cultural values, such as respecting elders, speaking the truth, and being kind, are integral to the nation's identity. However, according to Basketmouth, these values are not being sufficiently reflected in contemporary films.
Despite his criticism, Basketmouth remains optimistic about the future of Nigerian cinema. "I believe that we still have the opportunity to get it right," he stated, urging filmmakers to seize the chance to authentically represent Nigeria's cultural tapestry.
