Avoid unconfirmed stories that may cause unrest – DIG warns journalists

The Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Abiodun Alabi delivered a crucial message to journalists across Nigeria.

Speaking at the 2024 annual press week public lecture organized by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ekiti Council, DIG Alabi emphasized the critical role of the media in maintaining national peace and security.

He urged journalists to avoid publishing unverified news that could exacerbate insecurity in the country.

Alabi, who also serves as the Coordinating DIG for the South West Geo-political Zone, highlighted the importance of responsible journalism.

He stated, "There should be responsible reportage with accuracy and balance. It should be unbiased to avoid tensions." He cautioned against sensationalism and the use of derogatory or emotive language that might inadvertently aid insurgents in their disruptive aims.

The DIG also addressed broader security concerns, advocating for measures to prevent terrorist financing and protect Nigerian cyberspace from criminal interference.

He called for programs that enhance the capacity of allies through technical assistance.

Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji, represented by his Special Adviser on Media, Mr. Yinka Oyebode, commended the NUJ for their fair reporting and expressed a commitment to further collaboration in achieving shared prosperity goals.

Additionally, NUJ Vice President, B-Zone, Mrs. Ronke Samo, urged government and security agencies to ensure a free flow of information without interference.

In a show of community support, the Olufaki of Ifaki-Ekiti, Oba Adegbenro Falore, encouraged public cooperation with security forces, stating that security is a collective responsibility.
