Report emerged on Friday that Atiku Abubakar, the former vice president and 2023 presidential candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), criticized the House of Representatives for rejecting a bill proposing a six-year tenure for Nigerian presidents and governors.
The bill, sponsored by Ikenga Ugochinyere and 33 others, was dismissed through a voice vote during a plenary session on Thursday. Atiku expressed disappointment, stating that the lawmakers failed to recognize Nigeria's critical juncture.
He had previously submitted a memo to the National Assembly in October, advocating for a rotation of the presidency between the North and South. Atiku's media aide, Paul Ibe, conveyed that Atiku believed the bill would have encouraged elected officials to focus on their responsibilities, reducing political distractions.
Ibe stated, "So, it is sad that it was rejected, and we need to ensure that the laws we make promote the well-being of Nigerians and strengthen democracy in both word and deed." Atiku hopes the decision will be revisited, emphasizing the importance of laws that support the nation's democratic principles.
