Atiku Condemns Dele Farotimi's Arrest as Attempt to Establish One-Party State[PHOTO]

The arrest of Dele Farotimi, a prominent lawyer and political activist, by the Nigerian police has drawn significant criticism from former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

The arrest was initiated following a defamation petition filed by senior lawyer Afe Babalola. However, Atiku has strongly condemned this action, suggesting it is part of a broader strategy to intimidate and harass citizens, particularly those who oppose the current regime, thereby paving the way for a one-party state.

Atiku expressed his concerns on social media, stating, "The arrest and detention of lawyer and human rights advocate, Dele Farotimi, is unequivocally condemned.

It serves as a grim reminder of the dark days of military dictatorship when the iron fist of tyranny sought to crush all dissent." He emphasized that such actions are in direct contradiction to democratic principles, highlighting that freedom of speech and association are constitutionally enshrined rights in Nigeria.

He further criticized the involvement of law enforcement in what he described as a personal vendetta, noting, "The Police’s intervention in such matters is nothing less than the use of a sledgehammer to swat a fly, an overreach of unimaginable proportions." Atiku called for the immediate and unconditional release of Farotimi, arguing that grievances over defamation should be addressed through the courts rather than through police action.
