In the ongoing defamation case, Dele Farotimi, a prominent human rights activist, has firmly denied allegations that he sent Peter Obi, the Labour Party's presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, to plead with legal luminary Afe Babalola.
This clarification was made by Farotimi's lawyer, Tope Temokun, amidst growing public interest and media scrutiny.
The controversy began when Farotimi was arrested following a defamation petition filed by Afe Babalola and other notable Nigerians.
The arrest led to Farotimi being detained, with his bail application adjourned until December 20, 2024. During this period, Peter Obi visited Afe Babalola in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, reportedly to discuss Farotimi's situation.
Temokun, speaking to Channels Television, emphasized that Farotimi remains optimistic about overcoming the legal challenges he faces. "He [Farotimi] categorically told me that he never sent anyone to beg on his behalf," Temokun stated. He further added, "If anyone familiar with his principles believes otherwise, he would be deeply disappointed."
The case has sparked significant debate, with Farotimi's supporters and those of Afe Babalola clashing in court. Additionally, there have been reports of police barricading Afe Babalola’s Lagos firm due to a planned pro-Farotimi protest.
