The Lagos State Special Offences Court in Ikeja issued a bench warrant for the arrest of Ahmed Kuru, the former Managing Director of the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON).
This legal action was prompted by Kuru's failure to appear in court for his arraignment on charges related to an alleged N76 billion and $31.5 million fraud.
The allegations against Kuru include making false statements, fraudulent conversion, abuse of office, stealing, and dishonest conversion of property.
The case also involves several co-defendants, including Captain Roy Ilegbodu, the Managing Director of Arik Air; Kamilu Omokide, the receiver manager of Arik; Union Bank Plc; and a company named Super Bravo Limited.
These individuals and entities are facing six counts of financial misconduct, which, according to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), contravene specific sections of the Criminal Law of Lagos State.
During the court proceedings, EFCC's prosecuting counsel, Dr. Wahab Shittu (SAN), emphasized the seriousness of the charges, stating that "the former MD of AMCON had jumped administrative bail granted by the EFCC on several occasions."
Justice Mojisola Dada, presiding over the case, expressed her dissatisfaction with Kuru's absence and granted the request for a bench warrant, noting that "someone who is a former MD of AMCON is not supposed to behave that way."
The arraignment has been rescheduled for January 20, 2025, as the court awaits Kuru's appearance.
