The 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi has reignited the debate surrounding Nigeria's fuel subsidy removal.
Obi emphasized the critical need for transparency from the Federal Government, urging them to disclose how the savings from the subsidy removal are being utilized. "If you removed fuel subsidy, show us where it is going into so it can be tracked," Obi stated, highlighting the importance of accountability in government spending. He argued that without clear information on the allocation of these funds, it becomes challenging to ensure they are being used effectively for national development.
Obi also expressed concerns over Nigeria's rising debt and the increasing cost of living, despite the subsidy lift. "While subsidy has been lifted, the country’s debt continues to rise alongside the cost of living," he noted, questioning the overall impact on Nigerian citizens.
Furthermore, Obi stressed the importance of preserving democracy in Nigeria. He advocated for the implementation of biometric systems and greater scrutiny in the country's borrowing and spending practices. "We need to prioritize areas requiring urgent attention to improve the nation’s development," he added.
Addressing the prosecution of #EndBadGovernance protesters, Obi reaffirmed the right of citizens to peaceful protest. He suggested that the federal government should engage in dialogue with protesters rather than resorting to punitive measures.
Reflecting on his tenure as governor of Anambra State, Obi recalled handling similar situations by engaging directly with protesters when they shut down government agencies.
