World-renowned actor and musician Jamie Foxx in April 2023 faced a life-threatening medical emergency that left him fighting for his life. This harrowing experience was detailed in his Netflix comedy special, "Jamie Foxx: What Had Happened Was," where he opened up about the brain bleed that led to a stroke, an ordeal he described as going "to hell and back."
The incident occurred while Foxx was filming his new movie "Back in Action" in Atlanta. On April 11, he experienced a severe headache and asked a friend for aspirin. Before he could take it, he blacked out and remained unconscious for nearly three weeks.
His daughter, Corinne Foxx, initially shared on social media that her father had suffered a "medical complication" but was on the road to recovery due to "quick action and great care."
Foxx's condition was so critical that his family, including his sister Deidra Dixon, rushed to be by his side at Piedmont Hospital. There, doctors diagnosed him with a brain bleed that had caused a stroke, warning that immediate surgery was necessary to save his life. The gravity of the situation was such that Foxx later revealed he had no memory of the 20 days he spent in a coma.
Upon waking, Foxx found himself in a wheelchair, unable to walk or perform basic functions. He had to relearn these skills, relying heavily on nurses for daily needs like showering. Despite the dire prognosis, doctors assured him that recovery was possible, albeit challenging.
Foxx credits his family and faith for helping him through this difficult period, stating, "I lost everything, but the only thing I could hold onto was my sense of humor."
In his special, Foxx expressed gratitude to those who prayed for his recovery, showcasing his remarkable progress by singing, dancing, and playing the piano. His resilience and determination were evident as he performed in front of packed audiences during the tapings of his special in Atlanta.
CBS Mornings co-host Gayle King, who attended one of the tapings, noted that Foxx was "in fine form" and praised his ability to share his story on his own terms.
The cause of Foxx's brain bleed remains a mystery, as he reflected, "We still don't know exactly what happened to me." However, the experience has left a lasting impact on him, both physically and emotionally. At 56, Foxx is aware of the increased risk of stroke with age, though it's unclear if he had any pre-existing conditions that contributed to the event.
Foxx's journey to recovery included a stay at a rehabilitation center in Chicago, where he continued to regain his strength and mobility. Despite the challenges, he maintained a positive outlook, often using humor to cope with the situation. In his special, he recounted the surreal experience of seeing a tunnel bu🙂↕️t🙂↕️😘🥰 not the light, describing it as "oddly peaceful."
