The Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL), Mele Kyari, is facing intense pressure to step down.
Civil society groups and activists from the Niger Delta have issued a 72-hour ultimatum for his resignation, citing operational failures and unfulfilled promises in the oil sector.
The Niger Delta Activists for Renewed Hope (NDARH) have been vocal in their criticism, with President Comrade Jack Dickson stating, "The man Mele Kyari…has become so powerful that he believes no one could remove him."
The activists argue that under Kyari's leadership, key refineries in Port Harcourt, Warri, and Kaduna remain non-functional despite substantial government investments, leading to high fuel prices that burden Nigerians.
Adding to the pressure, Engr. Efe Irabor from the Coalition of Civil Society Groups against Corruption in the Energy Sector warned, "If the President keeps him, his government risks unpopularity." This coalition plans to mobilize 10 million Nigerians in protest, emphasizing the widespread discontent with Kyari's tenure.
