The Federal Government of Nigeria has earmarked ₦27 billion for the entitlements of former national leaders in its 2025 fiscal budget.
This allocation is part of a comprehensive ₦49.70 trillion spending plan presented by President Bola Tinubu, titled ‘Budget of Restoration: Securing Peace, Rebuilding Prosperity.’
The beneficiaries of this substantial allocation include former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo, Goodluck Jonathan, and Muhammadu Buhari, alongside ex-vice-presidents Atiku Abubakar and Yemi Osinbajo.
Military figures such as Gen. Yakubu Gowon and Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar are also set to receive these entitlements.
Critics have voiced concerns over the prioritization of funds amidst Nigeria's pressing economic challenges.
"At least they can't accept the money and still go around campaigning against him," remarked a commentator on Nairaland, reflecting public sentiment about the perceived disconnect between elite benefits and the struggles of ordinary Nigerians.
The budget, which emphasizes defense, infrastructure, and human capital development, faces a projected ₦13.39 trillion deficit, to be financed through borrowing.
In addition to the allocations for former leaders, ₦1.4 trillion is reserved for pensions and retirees’ benefits, with ₦2.3 billion specifically designated for former presidents and vice presidents.
Furthermore, the government has allocated ₦500 billion for various social investment programs, including a student loan scheme and poverty reduction initiatives.
These measures aim to balance honoring past leaders with addressing current socio-economic needs.
