109 Foreign Hackers Detained in Nigeria

Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the detention of 109 foreign nationals accused of attempting to defraud Nigerians.

The defendants, hailing from China, Indonesia, Vietnam, the Philippines, Thailand, Brazil, Malaysia, and Myanmar, face serious charges including cybercrime, money laundering, and illegal residency in Nigeria.

The court proceedings, which took place on November 22, revealed that these individuals allegedly conspired to execute fraudulent schemes on unregistered gambling platforms, causing substantial financial losses.

Justice Ekerete Akpan directed that the male defendants be held at Kuje prison in Abuja, while the female defendants were to be detained at Suleja prison in Niger State until their arraignment.

Highlighting the complexity of the case, five Brazilian defendants have requested a separate trial due to safety concerns.

Their counsel, Eric Oba, stated, “The other defendants developed ill-feelings for them after the statements. My clients are afraid for their safety and will wish to be allowed to remain at the police facility.”

The prosecution, represented by A. A. Egwu, acknowledged the logistical challenges of accommodating such a large number of detainees, noting, “My lord, we are currently overwhelmed. We don’t have the facility to keep all the defendants.”
